Final Reflection on HeLa

HeLa cells are very important for medical researchers today. They have been used in many medical advances, including helping researchers to to find the cure for Polio. I am aware that the United States still does not have a law to stop scientists,  from taking your blood and doing research on it. I believe that it is acceptable to draw blood from us and  subject it to research, if it is for a greater good. I willingly accept that my blood or any other tissues removed from my body be used to help terminally ill people. Is real important that we let researchers around the world do their job. Making laws that will interfere with medical research, will slowdown a lot of medical advances that will be helpful to us in the future. I firmly believe, that is more important to let researchers do their job than to protest about blood sample and cells drawn from your body. As the lacks family realize that their mother cells were important for medical advances and they are past their hate towards researchers.

What are three things you can change in your life or your habits to "go greener"?

1- wash laundry in cold water instead of hot.
2- Turn  off lights when you leave a room.
3- Switch one appliance to an energy efficient model.

Do you think that people in your home country think about going green as much as Americans do?        No in my country is all about the money. Even gasoline we put in our vehicle is not so clean as the one here. Although our food is fresher than the one in the United States its get polluted by the methods of  bringing the food to our cities.

What is one thing that really surprised you about going green or something that you didn't realize was so bad for the environment?  I thought that the food we ate in our locals supermarkets were good and not making any damage to our environment. Now that I am aware of what is going on,  will try my very best to go green and help the environment.

bp# 6

Henrietta Lacks a name many people do not know. Researchers in the world call her Hela and her cells were important for many scientific advance. The story was unknown to me, I wasn't aware that in the United States there were doctors capable of taking people blood, cells and so on without their concern.  In the Dominican Republic corruption is so high that anything can be done to any patients they just have to tell them that they need blood or whatever they want from you. They won't even tell you why they need it they just tell you they need it.The rules in the 50's and 60's were very different than what they are now. Now days doctors will ask you to sing papers and tell you exactly what they need from the patients, and explain the importance for it. It is up to you to sing the papers and let those researchers do thir job with your blood or cells.

What they did to Henrietta's family was wrong and should not happen again. I don't think it will be a problem now, with all the laws and requirements to work with someones cells. Doctors should always inform their patients  with every little detail and ensure that their patients understand what is going on with their blood work or whatever they are being research for.

BP # 5

Now days people are trying their best to consume a healthier produce and food. With health care being expensive and organic food difficult to find many people relay on their government, to help them trough  programs and other methods of informing their citizens in how to do it.

One of today's main problems is obesity and bad food sources for the people. To battle that the government and other organizations work together to bring ideas such as taxing soda so it could be expensive and difficult to buy for some people. I believe that soda should be tax because is really bad for your health. In addition soda causes about 2' 600 deaths per year and also researchers believes that it will help reduce 240,000 per year. Those who don't drink soda tend to have healthier denture because of the low ph acid soda have. To conclude i believed that soda should be tax to help us in the future and for our own good.

bp # 5 Taxes on Soda

To tax sodas so we could save more lives is a good idea. Soda is one of the factor that causes heart attack and diabetics. Also soda has a low ph acid that not only destroys your teeth but it can also damage your bones. Soda can plays a big role on people obesity, drinks like coke dr pepper and sprite has a large percentage of sugar, calories, caffeine, phosphorous and so on could damage our health in so many different ways. Diet soda is no help neither, many researchers believed that diet soda can boost the stroke risk. An example of this is the taxation of cigarettes, and how many of those cigarettes deaths has been falling down due to taxation of it. To conclude i strongly believed that soda should be tax if that reduces 2,600 deaths a year, and the risk of stroke and diabetics drop to a better percentage than what it is now.

Going Green

Since knowing how much better i can feed my family and myself , with an organic and local produce Iam     trying my best to get it. IT is so much healthier to get a product local grown, to help not only ourselves with better food but we could manage to maintain a better environment to better tomorrow. I know right now is hard for me and my family to have the access for those organic or minimally modified produce but i will try my best to find those places to have access for a more nutritionist produce on my table. I will be more concern now with buying a produce with a lower carbon footprint. My only struggle that i have with going green is that I do not have the knowledge about but I'm learning everyday a bit more about it and is motivating me to begin to go green.

Racial segregation in the United States

In the United States in the 1940's and 50's blacks, Hispanics, Jews and Asians were segregated from white people. They didn't have the same opportunities such as jobs, healthcare, school and many others thing. This laws were enforce by the government and sometimes by organize group of people who hated anybody without their skin color or believes. Many blacks were mistreated by these laws or sometimes kill because of how it was back then. A 50 year old black man had to be polite and called sir a 12 year old white kid. This were the darkest time in the US history and there is still a lot of people who are affected by the memories of those times today.
